Gimp 2.8.6 is available for RHEL clones, from Nux! repo.
You can add the Nux! repo or install only the package from the URL.
The package is called gimp28 to prevent any issue with the official package gimp.
x86_64:
rpm -Uvh ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/li.nux.ro/download/nux/dextop/el6/x86_64/gimp28-2.8.6-1.el6.nux.x86_64.rpm
x86:
rpm -Uvh ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/li.nux.ro/download/nux/dextop/el6/i386/gimp28-2.8.6-1.el6.nux.i686.rpm
